There is an old behaviour change diagram that really tells us a lot about ourselves. It shows us why some continue failing time and time again but it also shows us how some people catch fire and accomplish great things.
I’ll walk you through it very simply and quickly. It doesn’t matter where we start but typically it all start at “Beliefs”. So, lets start there. Dad tells his son, “You’re such a fast and hard working soccer player”… Son feels great (belief)… Tries hard at practice (action)….. Scores a goal (result)…. Dad says “you make me so proud”.. Son believes he is even greater (belief)… Tries even harder (better actions)…. Scores two goals (better outcome..)
You get the picture BUT the same cycle occurs with our health attempts, typically in the other direction. A man/woman half heartedly tries a diet (poor action) fails, quits or doesn’t loose weight (poor result) feels like a failure (poor belief). He/she musters up enough energy to start over all the while still thinking he/she sucks at weight-loss. Approaches the attempt with decreased focus/commitment/intensity (ever worse action) lasts even less time on the path (even worse outcome) and is left feeling even worse then before.
So, how do we break the cycle?
